We originally built the SwingMate with a standard “swing plane and hand path gate drill” top of mind.

A gate drill is where you place alignment rods in such a way that you swing through the "gate".

But the possibilities for what drills can be performed is virtually endless. Our patent-pending design utilises easy-adjust ratcheting hinges that show the angles so you can set up super fast every time. (Read more about the product features below)

It also has alignment rods on the ground set to show the target line as well as ideal paths for draw and fade.

Take it to the range - indoor or outdoor. Set up in your garage and go practice your swing whenever you have 10 minutes to spare. Better still, make it a habit to have 20 swings every time you get out of the car. Embed the muscle memory.

Obviously don't step up and go for a full swing on your first try. By the same token, once you know what you're doing, don't be afraid to swing away. We have absolutely punished the products in testing, they take some serious abuse before anything breaks.

While you would have to be swinging wildly offline to hit the SwingMate in any way to cause harm to you or your clubs, you still need to take it slow. The way to better golf is not full swings straight off the bat, but doing slower drills to gain muscle memory. “Feel versus real” as they say. Build up from slow before you start hitting full shots.

When you’re ready to challenge yourself, build your speed, making sure you don’t slip into old habits. Increase the speed to 50% then 70, then 90, then full speed. Whenever your shots start to become erratic, go back a step.

Let’s start with why golfers are chasing the elusive draw. When you hit a ball in a slight in-to-out path it puts spin characteristics on the ball that makes the ball go further. It has less backspin than if you hit it with an out-to-in path. So, especially when it lands, it will roll out further.

Hitting longer shots means you are closer to the hole with each successive shot, and that means you can use a shorter club for your next shot, which is more accurate when aiming at the green. (A shorter club is easier to be more accurate).

Hitting a ball with an in-to-out path means the ball will curve from right to left (for a right-hander). So you need to aim slightly to the right of the Target to allow for the curve so the balls lands back in the centre. It spins its way back to the centre line. This is called a DRAW.

When someone hits a beautiful draw – with ball compression that feels buttery smooth off the club face and rolls out further than your buddies - you’ll often hear people say “Gee, you striped that!”. That’s where the name Stryper comes from.

In case you were wondering, a draw is not always the best shot! If a right-handed player has a bunker on the right side they may want to play a dead straight shot or even play what’s called a FADE or a CUT – one that starts to the left of the target for a right-hander - to minimise the risk of ending up in the sand.

There is nothing wrong with these shots, they just don’t go quite as far, which means you’ll need to use a “longer” club to achieve the same distance. As we learned above, longer clubs are slightly harder to be accurate.

SwingMate also has the option to practice these types of shots by using the FADE holes.

We recommend starting with three key drills. Swing Plane, Hand Path and Rotation. You can do them one at a time (but Swing Plane and Hand Path we recommend should always go together), or you can also get as creative as you like.

Using three hinges you could set up all three of these rods and practice with or without a ball, in your garage or on the range or on a simulator.
