A 6mm shift in ball position changes your launch angle by 3 degrees. Research says you cannot feel that. Here is what the science actually shows.
THE SCIENCE OF BALL POSITION IN GOLF
WHAT PEER-REVIEWED RESEARCH ACTUALLY SAYS ABOUT BALL POSITION
Most golf instruction on ball position is based on teaching tradition. The advice to play the ball "middle of your stance" has been passed down for decades. A growing body of scientific research tells a more precise story — and the precision matters more than most golfers realise.
In 2018, Zhang and Shan published a biomechanical study of eleven male professional golfers in PLOS ONE, using a three-dimensional motion analysis system with eight infrared cameras and two force platforms to capture address positions at multiple ball positions. The study is published open access on PubMed Central (PMC6243633).
Their key finding: a shift of just 0.6 centimetres in mediolateral ball position produced a 3-degree change in vertical ball launch angle. That is six millimetres — less than the width of a standard pencil. And it changed launch angle by three full degrees.
The same study found that ball position shifts also directly changed club-face aim, club path, and angle of attack in the mediolateral direction. Moving the ball anteroposteriorly (closer or further away) changed club-head speed and angle of attack. In other words, ball position does not affect one variable. It cascades through all of them.

This research connects directly to the five fundamentals framework — ball position is one of the three fundamentals that cannot be self-diagnosed by feel alone.
THE LOW POINT — WHERE THE SCIENCE STARTS
The swing travels on an arc. The bottom of that arc — the low point — is not fixed. It moves depending on the club being used and the address position. Ball position must be set relative to where the low point falls for each club, not to some arbitrary reference like "middle of your stance."
Rotary Swing's biomechanics team explain the consequence clearly: "If the ball is back in my stance, the club is going to swing out to the trail side because it is traveling on an arc. If I do not square the face, I am going to hit a block. If I over-square the face while my path is going that far to the trail side, I am going to hit a hook."
This is the cascade in action. A single ball position error — invisible to feel — forces the face to compensate, forces the path to compensate, and produces a shot that looks like a swing problem. Correct stance width is equally critical here — an incorrect stance width shifts the arc low point, which compounds the ball position error. The Coastal Breeze News golf instruction column summarises it precisely: "Changing ball position can also have an effect on other critical factors in the golf swing" including angle of attack, path, and shot shape. Ball position is not one variable. It is a multiplier across all of them.
WHAT BALL POSITION DOES TO FACE ANGLE
Face angle at impact is the golfer's own variable — no training aid can change that. But ball position directly determines whether the face has had time to square at the moment of contact.
The club is rotating throughout the downswing. At the moment the club reaches the ball, the face is at whatever angle it has reached in its rotation. Too far back and it has not yet reached square — it arrives open. Too far forward and it has already rotated past square — it arrives closed. The golfer then has to make a timing compensation with the hands to manage the face, which is inconsistent under pressure.
This means getting ball position right does not fix face angle — but it removes the forced compensation that makes face angle unpredictable. Correct ball position gives face angle the opportunity to behave the same way every swing. Understanding ball flight laws then gives you the tool to read what your face is doing and adjust deliberately — rather than guessing.
This is why the Stryper instruction philosophy holds that face angle should remain free. A golfer with correct ball position, correct stance width, and correct alignment can then use face angle deliberately — opening or closing it slightly to shape shots. That is the correct order. Face angle as a skill, not a survival mechanism.

WHY YOU CANNOT FEEL BALL POSITION DRIFT
The Zhang and Shan study found that the ball position shift that produced measurable changes in launch angle, face aim, and club path was 0.6 centimetres. Not 6 centimetres. Not 2 centimetres. Six millimetres.
No golfer can feel a six-millimetre drift in ball position at address. The proprioceptive resolution required does not exist in human hands and feet. You step up to the ball, you feel roughly in position, and you swing. Meanwhile, the geometry has changed.
